General Links

This web site provides a powerful search engine for finding papers in the peer-reviewed scientific literature. It also allows you to set up an email alert based on key words, and is an excellent way to get regular updates on papers published in your field of interest. There is no cost for this service, and when you view papers, many will include links to publishers' websites where you may view full text articles and print pdf files, if your library holds an electronic subscription.

This web site, developed by Dr. James Haney (Center for Freshwater Biology, University of New Hampshire), has a very user-friendly photographic key that can be used to identify zooplankton. There also is information regarding the biology and ecology of major zooplankton groups and particular species on this site.

This web site is called the 'plankton net.' It provides a wealth of information about plankton, including links to home pages of leading researchers in the field.

This web site contains outstanding photographs of bacteria, phytoplankton, protozoa, and zooplankton. The author and photographer is Dr. Wim van Egmond. In addition to the photos, this site gives instructions on how to take photo-micrographs of zooplankton and other microscopic biota.

This web page provides instructions for making your own plankton net using common household items (nylon stockings, a coat hanger, some nylon line, a plastic bottle, and some duct tape. This is a great way to get started if you just want to have fun looking at some qualitative samples of lake or pond plankton.

This link is to the home page of Wildco, a major commercial distributor of plankton nets, traps, and other items typically used for sampling and processing zooplankton samples in quantitative research programs. This link is not an endorsement by UF / IFAS of that company or its products. However, I personally have found their products to be of exceptionally high quality.

This link is to the 'Cladocera Page,' a web site with information about cladocerans.

This link is to a site with excellent 2D and 3D images of plankton.
